Whats new in Sawston, have your say

Lynton Way Skatepark,

We plan to build a park for skateboards and scooters on the Lynton Way recreation ground, using funds from the developers of the housing estates on Babraham Road.

The designers we’ve chosen – Betongpark – presented their plans at an open evening in July 2025. Lots of people came to give us their views.

They’re now updating the plan to incorporate the comments from the public consultation, and will bring them back to the council soon.

Please feel free to make any comments on the park using the form below.

Lynton Way Pavilion

The current pavilion on the Lynton Way recreation ground is not fit for purpose and needs to be replaced. Contributions from the housing estate developers will go towards the project, and we believe this is a great opportunity to create a new building which can be an asset for the village.

The plans below show a basic outline concept of what we could include. Many features of the new pavilion are fixed as a must have, such as changing rooms and showers for both home and away football teams and facilities for officials, but we would also like to include a larger space that can also be used for meetings and events, as well as facilities for youth groups. We also plan to include more parking spaces.

The council is working on a design brief so we can select a company to design and build the project.

If you have any comments at this stage, please use the feedback form shown below by selecting ‘Lynton Way Pavilion’ on the drop-down list. We’re very interested in suggestions about what we should include in the design.

20mph speed limit

Given the rapidly increasing size of Sawston, both in housing and commercial / scientific research facilities to the northeast of Babraham road, the Parish Council feels it should now act to protect all the village’s pedestrians and road users.

Why are we doing this

  • Cambridgeshire County Council provide funding every year for Parish Councils to apply to introduce 20mph speed limits for roads where this would be a benefit. The primary need is to protect New Road where 1400 children go to Sawston Village College every day – many using bicycles and lifts in cars at the same time as competing with HGV vehicles and six buses bringing pupils from neighbouring villages – but the same protection should apply to all the other roads within the central core area of Sawston.
  • Research shows that reducing the speed of vehicles saves lives and injuries. Hitting a pedestrian at 30mph makes them seven times more likely to die compared to a 20mph impact. And for children, being struck by a vehicle at 20mph has a 90% survival rate, but at 30mph, the survival rate drops to about 50%.
  • The application process requires Parish Councils to answer very detailed questions. A panel then awards funding to 8 councils a list of over >100 councils applying each year. The majority of the successful applications were for schemes that covered the whole of a village.
  • Sawston Parish Council is therefore starting the process of preparing all the information we need in order to be able to apply in the next funding round.

We’d love to hear your views about this proposal – we’re keen to hear from as many people as possible

In particular we’d like to know:

  • Do you support the idea of a 20mph zone in general?
  • Should Babraham Road be included?
  • Where should the zone start on Cambridge Road and London Road?

Please use the feedback form shown below by selecting ‘speed limit’ on the drop-down list.

The map below shows the complete view of Sawston with the green lines showing the possible area of the 20mph zone

Please note that for clarity, all minor roads within the area will be subject to the same 20mph zone.
